Sapphire

Sapphire

Sapphire, a precious gemstone from the corundum family, is best known for its mesmerizing blue hues. However, this remarkable stone also appears in shades of yellow, pink, and green, each possessing a unique charm. With their rich, vibrant colors and exceptional durability, sapphires are among the most coveted gemstones in the world.

The origins of sapphire

Sri Lanka remains the most significant source of sapphires, where some of the world’s brightest natural gemstones have formed deep within the earth over millions of years. Other major sapphire deposits are found in Madagascar, East Africa, and Myanmar. The legendary Kashmir sapphires, known for their velvety blue glow, are now nearly impossible to find, making them highly prized at auction houses.

Color and characteristics of sapphire

Color is one of the most defining factors in a sapphire’s value. Among blue sapphires, the most sought-after are those in the Royal Blue shade—renowned for their deep, velvety richness and remarkable saturation. When paired with expert cutting, these sapphires display a striking play of light, creating flashes of blue that resemble the surface of a tranquil ocean.

Beyond blue, sapphires exist in a spectrum of stunning colors. Yellow sapphires exude warmth and radiance, making them a timeless choice for jewelry. Pink sapphires range from delicate pastel tones to intense fuchsia, offering a romantic and modern appeal. Green sapphires are admired for their subtle bluish undertones, lending them a sophisticated and refined beauty.

Most sapphires undergo traditional heating to enhance their clarity and bring out their natural brilliance. This treatment is widely accepted in the gemstone industry and does not diminish a sapphire’s value—rather, it enhances the color and transparency that nature intended.
